Till They Came Home

I saw this on the Naval Historical Center's Website:
Today in U.S. Naval History:

September 28

1850 - Congress outlaws flogging on Navy ships.

Things sure have changed--in more ways than one. Back then women were only allowed to wave at Navy ships. Today Navy women are sailing on Navy ships, flying Navy jets, or following Marines into combat as Corpsmen.

On this day in 1991 I found out my ship was deploying to Desert Shield. We left the Monday after Thanksgiving. Fewer than 2400 of the 575,000 troops who went to Desert Storm were Navy women. Even less were mothers. How nice of someone to notice:

. . . times were hard but they were fun in 1991
the year that John and Sally said goodbye
he held two kids in his arms
as she left for Desert Storm
John could see the sadness in her eyes
he watched her sail away in navy blue
up on the quarter deck in full salute. . .
