Over 30 years ago, women were discovering that they could be socially, politically, and financially independent. One by one, the institutions and traditions that held them tied to a single role fell away. They wanted to be sure that their new-found independence would not be taken away, so they asked that an amendment be added to the Constitution. Just as when they fought for the right to vote, there were many who were concerned that freedom to would destroy their freedom from. They fought with everything they could to stop the amendment because they were afraid of the hoped-for changes. Thus, the proposed ERA (equal rights amendment) died a lonely death. It's nice to know that we really didn't need it. We are more powerful than ever, so much so that those who cried out against women's rights now take them for granted. Our children can't even conceive of the confining world we knew. So, we really didn't need the amendment after all. Thank God.
